Why Your Team Isn’t Clicking (And How DISC Can Fix It)

Raise your hand if you’ve ever had to repeat yourself three times in a meeting only to be met with blank stares and polite nods. Yep, been there. But before you jump to conclusions and blame your team’s IQ score, let’s talk about something more likely: your message got lost in translation.

Communication is messy. People hear with their personality, not your intent. That’s where DISC comes in.

DISC is a behavior assessment tool that breaks us down into four personality styles: Dominant (D), Influence (I), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C). Think of it as a cheat sheet for understanding your coworkers before you throw your laptop across the room.

  • D types are your go-getters. They want fast results and don’t care about small talk. If you’re leading one, skip the fluff and talk outcomes.
  • I types (like me!) love people, energy, and a good brainstorm session. Give them an audience and they’ll give you magic.
  • S types value routine and harmony. If you want them to embrace change, make it feel emotionally safe and low-risk.
  • And C types? These folks crave data and precision. Want them to take action? Show them a spreadsheet glowing with steady progress.

Understanding how your team members tick isn’t just a “nice to have”, it’s the secret sauce to unlocking performance. You can’t expect a steady S type to thrive in chaos, or a D type to sit patiently through a 10-slide PowerPoint on why teamwork matters.

At Bad Day Excellence, I coach leaders to work with these styles, not against them. Know your people, honor their wiring, and build habits that align with how they naturally operate. The result? Less friction, better morale, and a team that feels like it’s finally speaking the same language.

If you’re tired of feeling like a broken record, start with understanding your DISC style. Better yet, get your whole team onboard. And no, you don’t need to be a psychologist to make it work, just a leader who listens.
